Building Interest in the
Sustainable Energy in America Factbook
Challenge
In late 2015, the nation’s leading advocacy organization for businesses involved in sustainable energy was looking for a new communications partner for their popular annual sustainable energy report released each year in partnership with Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF). The group, the Business Council for Sustainable Energy (BCSE), had built a strong reputation for the report over several years and wanted to both continue and expand on previous interest and engagement from the media.
Response
The BCSE hired Ben to help a multi-stakeholder team of staff, member company representatives and community influencers with message development, media outreach coordination, press conference planning and execution and media interview management and follow-up. Ben worked collaboratively with the team on messaging, including development of the 2016 report press release and quotes for principals involved in the report release.
Result
Ben moderated the 2016 report release press conference with leaders from BSCE, BNEF and BCSE member companies. He engaged dozens of reporters from key media outlets and secured participation in the event and/or coverage of the report’s release from outlets as diverse as E&E News, Greentech Media, International Business Times, The Guardian, Fortune, U.S. News & World Report, National Geographic, Politico and Huffington Post among others. The 2016 report release was so successful that BCSE has hired RENEWPR every year since for assistance on this annual industry publication. The ongoing partnership has yielded continued success (including coverage in USA Today, Reuters, TIME, The Washington Post, the Houston Chronicle, S&P Global and the Washington Examiner among other outlets) despite an evolving media environment that has required a new strategy and even more coordinated outreach and engagement program each year.
Ben’s expertise and advice were key to the successful implementation of the BCSE’s communications strategy for the release of the 2016, 2017 and 2018 Factbooks. He also managed a team of communications professionals we partnered with that freed up BCSE staff to manage other aspects of the project. We greatly appreciate all that Ben does for the BCSE.
